As part of the Transport Master Plan 2013, the Cross Island Line (CRL) will provide connection between the western, north-eastern and eastern parts and thus reduce significantly the amount of time each day a commuter travels to work from the west will take to the east and vice versa. This is inline with the plan to bring Singapore closer to its goal of having eight in ten households living within a 10-minute walk to a MRT station. In Phase one, Bright Hill will be one of the four interchange stations to be connected in addition to Ang Mo Kio with the North South (NS) Line, Hougang with the North Eastern Line (NEL) and at Pasir Ris with the East-West (EW) line. With the addition of the CRL, Amenities in the east such as Changi Beach Park or Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park will also become more accessible to the general public.
Commuters will have more options with the larger number of interchange becoming available and widening their options to travel to their destination and thus shortening their travel time.
An MRT extension with four more stations will be added to the Cross Island Line (CRL) by 2031. This will give residents in Punggol and Pasir Ris a direct link to the eastern and north-eastern parts of Singapore.
The 7.3km extension to the future CRL will join the existing Punggol station on the North East Line (NEL) to Pasir Ris station, and supplement bus services that currently ply between both towns.
Travelling from Punggol Central to Pasir Ris via the MRT extension will take 15 to 20 minutes, down from the current journey time of 40 to 45 minutes by bus, said by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
